Team Taylor wants to congratulate Wally Brondstatter, the varsity girls water polo coach at San Lorenzo Valley High, for being awarded this season’s KSBW Golden Whistle Award!
Brondstatter has been coaching for over a decade and is retiring this year. He received an overwhelming number of nominations from his athletes and their parents hoping to get him recognized – and it worked! Here are some of the nice words they had for him:
“[Brondstatter] builds individual relationships with every athlete, whether on his team or not.”
“Wally Brondstatter is more than just our coach, for many of us players, he is a dear friend, close confidant, and a second father to us. Wally created an environment within [San Lorenzo Valley High] that was inclusive and open. His ability to help install confidence, talent, and maturity in his players is a testament to his tremendous leadership skills, and his kindheartedness… Wally wanted every player on his team to find a sense of community and family, and to learn the skills of perseverance, dedication, and the importance of having a strong support system… Wally is not just a coach, he is a positive, driving force in the lives of his players.”
“As a player I can say that everyday is a good day on the pool deck, there are many times that Wally has been the best coach ever. He encourages us to be better and is really a great person.”
“[Brondstatter] has coached for many years, and always with a smile. He goes out of his way to acknowledge all individuals and help them improve.”
“After the last Cougar varsity water polo game, Wally had all the girls in a huddle, and was trying to say how much they meant to him, how much he has enjoyed coaching these incredible young women, and how much he was going to miss them. Everyone, including Wally, was so emotional they could hardly speak. Everyone knew this was his last game, and the girls played their hearts out for him and it showed. Wally has built our school an incredible water polo program and has put [San Lorenzo Valley High] on the map for this sport. He has left a lasting impression for years to come — one that many girls coming up in this sport will benefit from. He will be sorely missed by parents, players, school staff, and friends. Wally is one of a kind!”
Congratulations, Wally!
