Yesterday was Seed Day for the THRIVE Accelerator at our Corporate headquarters in Salinas, California. Through the THRIVE Accelerator select companies will gain access to the best expertise and resources of top agriculture and tech leaders to help deploy their innovative technologies. Taylor Farms is working with John Hartnett and the Silicon Valley Global Group to advance Ag Tech in our fresh produce industry.
The Thrive Accelerator is a highly selective program that attracts Ag Tech startup companies from around the world (200 applicants this round) and helps accelerate their growth through exposure, mentoring and financial support. The best startups will be selected and reside in the Western Growers Innovation Center in the Taylor Building to continue their growth and development. Participating startups have the potential opportunity to receive up to $5 million in funding. The goal is to speed innovation in our industry.
We really love it when others spread the word about the benefits of quality produce in a healthy diet – something the USDA highlighted recently in its new dietary guidelines.
Most recently, entertainer John Tesh, who hosts a syndicated TV show and Web site called “Intelligence for Your Life,” talked about “surprisingly healthy foods that are also inexpensive.” Here’s what he had to say:
Iceberg Lettuce. It’s packed with fiber, iron and vitamin C. It also has bone-building vitamin K. Iceberg does everything from prevent dangerous plaque build-up in our arteries to boost digestion. Another benefit? Iceberg lettuce is one of the lowest calorie foods you can eat: one cup has roughly eight calories.
We agree completely. Taylor Farms is all about providing consumers with the freshest, highest quality produce available.
Tesh’s show, co-hosted by wife and actress Connie Selleca, appears on 157 stations around the country.
Taylor Farms Investment in Clean Energy
Mirrors Commitment to Safe, High Quality Produce
Just this week, California Gov. Jerry Brown joined a group of 17 governors from both parties in signing the “Governors’ Accord for a New Energy Future,” a commitment to working together on clean energy advancements to protect natural resources and improve air quality.
Taylor Farms is committed to using clean, reliable, affordable and sustainable energy to help power our food processing facilities because we know that one bag of salad won’t change the world, but how we make it might. Our commitment to a healthier environment goes hand in hand with our mission to make healthy fresh foods for our consumers.
We’re proud to produce healthy foods powered by renewable energy.
We invest in sustainable energy from the sun and wind and have installed fuel cells to generate cleaner electricity. These accomplishments, in addition to future sustainability projects, will help to reduce our greenhouse gas emissions and provide certainty about our energy costs.
Our retail processing facility in Salinas has 2,200 solar panels installed on the roof which generate 675 kilowatts of emission-free, environmentally beneficial electricity. We are proud of this and have been recognized by the White House as a national leader in sustainable energy.
We also installed a large wind turbine at our Gonzales plant. The 350-foot turbine was one of the first in the Salinas Valley. The one megawatt of electricity it produces provides up to 50 percent of the power for the facility.
We’ll continue to push forward and invest significant resources to produce healthy, high-quality food powered by renewable energy.
