  1. Taylor Farms Donation a Year Ago Helped Bring Expanded Healthcare to Community

One year ago this month, Taylor Farms was proud to donate $1 million to the Salinas Valley Memorial Hospital Foundation capital campaign. This donation went towards the establishment of a state-of-the-art health and wellness center in Gonzales, in partnership with Dr. Christine Ponzio. The center focuses on prevention, wellness and disease management in South Monterey County communities.

In November of 2015, the newly-named Taylor Farms Family Health & Wellness Center began providing vital individual and family medical care, including annual physicals; diabetes screening, diagnosis and management; immunizations; asthma care; laboratory services (including testing results on site); sports and school physicals; wellness programs; and patient education.

The 6,400-sqare-foot medical facility and the addition of two bilingual physicians allowed Dr. Ponzio’s practice to increase its patient care capacity from 17,000 to more than 25,000 visits a year.

Taylor Farms Family Health & Wellness Center is a hospital-based Rural Health Clinic (RHC). The purpose of the RHC program is to improve access to primary care in underserved areas with the goal of improving health and quality of life for individuals and families. RHC’s are certified to receive special Medicare and Medicaid reimbursement

Taylor Farms is excited to be involved in a project that helps provide outstanding health care to our families, our employees and our community.  We appreciate being able to collaborate with Salinas Valley Memorial to expand access and ensure that quality health care is affordable. Our support for this new facility reflects Taylor Farms’ deep commitment to the communities where we live and work.

  2. Taylor Farms Continues to Improve Waste Reduction and Recycling Efforts

Did you know that businesses produce over 50% of the waste in Salinas? Because of this, Taylor Farms knows that it is critical to do our part as a company to improve waste by reducing, reuse, and recycle.

In part to educate our employees and our community about waste reduction and recycling,  today Taylor Farms hosted our second annual lunch and learn, “Trash Talk.” We talked with more than 80 employees about recycling best practices, hoping to improve waste to help eliminate recycling confusion, and to help answer the common question: ”Can this be recycled?”

“Taylor Farms is always working towards improving our sustainability efforts and this seminar allows our employees to learn more about recycling programs in Salinas,” says Nicole Flewell, Director of Sustainability at Taylor Fresh Foods, Inc. “Recycling is important – it can save energy, water, and precious natural resources, so we all have a responsibility to do our part!”

  3. TAYLOR FARMS CONTINUES COMMITMENT TO INVESTING IN RENEWABLE ENERGY SOURCES

As the leading producer of value-added produce in North America, Taylor Farms is dedicated to being thoughtful stewards of the land and environment.  For the past decade, we have been largely focused on sustainability projects around renewable energy and we’re very excited to announce that we’ve recently completed a 1 megawatt solar project at our Gonzales facility! This system offsets more than 10 percent of that facility’s energy consumption annually and is part of Taylor Farms’ commitment to investing in renewable energy sources across the country.

“Taylor Farms focuses on delivering healthy, delicious foods to consumers nationwide, as well as making a positive and sustainable impact on our community,” said Nicole Flewell, director of sustainability at Taylor Farms. “By equipping our facilities with solar panels and adopting renewable energy sources, we continue to move in that direction. Not only are we taking care of the environment but we’re also providing ourselves with reliable and cost effective energy to help produce the best products.”

We currently use renewable energy sources including solar, wind and fuel cells. The latest Taylor Farms system in Gonzales, California coupled with its existing wind turbine can offset more than 25 percent of that facility’s energy consumption during peak periods.

  4. Taylor Farms Celebrates Fresh at The New York Produce Show

Taylor Farms attended The New York Produce Show and Conference this week to “celebrate fresh.” We had an awesome booth set up where we showcased our tasty Taylor Farms products including Stir Fry Kits and Chopped Salad Kits, and sampled two chopped salads: Farmhouse Bacon and Sweet Kale.

  5. Taylor Farms Celebrates Dedication to Sustainability

Taylor Farms’ mission is to be North America’s favorite maker of salads and healthy fresh foods, and we cannot accomplish that goal without a genuine commitment to responsible and sustainable energy practices.

Taylor Farms currently uses energy generated by solar panels, a wind turbine, and fuel cells, in addition to numerous efficiency measures, to help reduce greenhouse gas emissions and provide certainty about our energy cost. This November, we celebrated two very important sustainability anniversaries.

November 2012: We activated a clean energy system at our Salinas plant. The system is comprised of five new 200-kilowatt energy servers and uses fuel cell technology, converting fuel into electricity without the combustion required by a conventional electrical generator. The system cuts carbon dioxide emissions by almost 30% and nearly eliminates nitrogen oxide and sulfur dioxide emissions. It produces electricity using nearly no water – close to 100% less than an average power plant.

November 2014: We began operating one of the Salinas Valley’s first wind turbines. The blades of the 398 foot wind turbine help power our Gonzales vegetable processing facility, spinning up to 20 rotations per minute and supply up to one megawatt of power.
