  1. Taylor Farms’ Cal Poly Alumni Return to Annual Ag Showcase to Recruit Talent

Each year, Cal Poly’s Agribusiness Club hosts their annual Ag Showcase, an event that garners attendance from over 500 students pursuing job opportunities in the agriculture industry. The showcase gives attendees an opportunity to network and communicate with company representatives from all different aspects of the industry, from fresh produce growers and shippers, to family owned wineries and farming technology specialists.

“Being a first year, I went into Ag Showcase nervous and without many expectations; however, after talking to a few companies, I realized that the event was put on for students in the same position as myself,” said Maya Capurro-Frosch, Student, Cal Poly. “Ag Showcase provides hundreds of students with amazing opportunities. Whether you are a first year, like myself, or a fourth year preparing to graduate, all the companies come with smiling faces to help students take the next step in their professional career. I am part of the Cal Poly Agribusiness Management Club so it was especially rewarding to see it all come together – being a huge success for so many in the end.”

Taylor Farms has been a long time participant in the Ag Showcase, utilizing the opportunity to recruit passionate, up-and-coming talent to join our Taylor Farms team for summer internships or other open positions. Representing Team Taylor were Michelle Roberts, Foodservice Sales, and Tricia Seduski, Retail Sales, both of whom are successful Cal Poly Alumni who have grown their careers with Taylor Farms.

“I remember attending the Ag Showcase as a student and it was such a great opportunity to network with industry leaders,” says Roberts. “The Cal Poly Ag Business program does a great job preparing students to enter the industry with confidence, professionalism, and current industry knowledge. Attending the showcase this year representing Taylor Farms was a rewarding experience for me as a Cal Poly Alumni. We had a great time meeting all the students and seeing the young and enthusiastic energy!”

  3. Supporting the Boys and Girls Clubs of Tracy Literacy Program to Help Local Youth

The Boys and Girls Clubs of Tracy (BGCT) believes that one of the most important skills we can teach our children is how to be great readers. We at Taylor Farms agree completely.

For this reason, Taylor Farms Pacific is the lead sponsor of the BGCT “Early Literacy Program,” pledging $50,000 the past two years, with a commitment of at least $35,000 for the next two. This donation supports 120 children in the second and third grades who are reading below grade level to take part in the program that will help them to reach proficiency in their reading. Additionally, funding helps cover the reading intervention program’s expenses, including books, supplies, field trips, and a graduation event at the end of each school year.

“Taylor Farms believes in supporting our local youth, they are our future,” said Robin Lopez, Administrative Manager,  Taylor Farms Pacific. “The Boys and Girls Club is a wonderful organization, whose staff is truly dedicated in developing local youth and helping families in our community”.

The reading intervention program takes place at the clubhouses at Central, Jacobson, and McKinley elementary schools in Tracy, CA. The long-term goal of the program is to offer reading help to as many as 250 students at all six clubhouses in Tracy.

“The partnership with Taylor Farms has been life changing for the youth in our reading program. Having the sustained, multi-year funding pledge has ensures the reading intervention program will be an ongoing support for our youth,” said Kelly Wilson, Executive Director at the Boys and Girls Club of Tracy. “The changes in the kids’ reading has been remarkable, the confidence that shines through in their reading after the program is all that is needed to know we are making a difference.”

Taylor Farms is very proud to be a part of this important effort. The program’s success is reflected through statistics detailing 87% of participants have improved in comprehension and 91% have improved in fluency. With 60% of the children in Tracy Unified School Districts falling short in reading proficiency, our community can make a real difference by playing an active role in this BGCT literacy campaign.

  4. Support for UC Davis Research Center Yields Bounty of Vital Food Safety Initiatives

When Taylor Farms pledged $2 million nearly a decade ago to help launch the Center for Produce Safety (CPS) at UC Davis, the goal was to advance an aggressive research agenda that provided produce companies with the guidance needed to advance their food safety efforts.  Today, we are proud that our commitment to this important work is making a real difference.

Since its inception as part of the university’s Western Institute for Food Safety and Security, CPS has compiled an impressive body of work, awarding $16.4 million and funding 100 research projects at 30 universities and organizations involving some of the world’s leading produce safety scientists.  CPS also has garnered a global reputation.  An example is the major CPS research symposium which took place in Seattle, WA June 28-29, drawing food safety scientists from around the world.

To date, Taylor Farms has contributed $2.25 million to CPS.  The first major multi-year project funded by the center was the USDA validation of the SmartWash produce wash system that is the centerpiece of the Taylor Farms’ industry-leading production process, according to Jim Brennan of SmartWash Solutions, a member of the CPS Technical Committee.

In addition to Brennan, another Taylor Farms team member, Alec Leach, Taylor Farms Foodservice President, served until earlier this year on the CPS Board of Directors and Executive Committee.

“The enhancement of food safety in our industry is ongoing,“ said Leach  “We are constantly learning more about sources and vectors for potential contamination and addressing risks to our industry’s customers.”

The CPS mission to “provide and share ready-to-use, science-based solutions to prevent or minimize produce safety vulnerabilities” dovetails with Taylor Farms commitment to providing consumers with the freshest, healthiest and safest produce available.

In its research on food safety and security, UC Davis engages its School of Veterinary Medicine, College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences and the School of Medicine.  They work in partnership with the California Department of Food and Agriculture and Department of Health Services.

Taylor Farms is pleased to support CPS in its goal of implementing food safety initiatives at the speed of our industry.
